I also use Debian unstable on my desktops.  Sometimes you update and
something major breaks, but usually it's something you can work around
until it's fixed and another update comes along.

Yeah, I just don't use Gnome or KDE.  The keyboard is usually a much
faster way to interface with a computer than a mouse is.  Therefore my
X sessions are built around lots and lots of terminals.  No point in
dealing with buggy GUIs that just take up resources and screen real
estate.

After you get settled in to a distro/release, whatever it is, take
some time to go out and really shop for a window manager.  I try to do
this once every couple of years.  I currently use fluxbox, but I
haven't gone shopping in a while.  If you can find a window manager
that you like which doesn't have a crapload of Gnome and KDE
dependencies, you might just find that your systems are much more
stable and easier to maintain.  

Both of those projects are a mess of dependencies.

Aptitude is quite good.  You have to learn a few key strokes, but it
has all of the Synaptic features AFAIK.  It's also a lot easier to use
via SSH...
