I think it probably has a lot to do with the "known" factor as well. It may be better or faster or more secure, but all those things are invisible mostly to the end user. They have already mapped out the costs for the lifecycle of the hardware and probably aren't interested in making radical changes until such a time as it becomes necessary. On a somewhat different and anecdotal note, I know one local business who when offered a FOSS solution said that they did not want to run that "communist" software. ------Original Message------ From: m0gely Sender: [email protected] To: General Linux/UNIX discussion and help;civil and on-topic ReplyTo: General Linux/UNIX discussion and help;civil and on-topic Subject: Re: [PLUG] We need more Linux in this town... Is this just by default? Are they I think your first sentence is key. "I don't understand". You act as if there is no value in the products and technologies you listed. > not interested in saving money? Without even stepping foot inside their door you already have the best fit for their needs? And you said "saving money" and "custom solution" in almost the same sentence. This is too vague regardless of platform, and comes with it's own set of liabilities. > I wish I could go into every one of these bizs and show them what Linux > is capable of and then hook them up with talented people who could > customize OS/package builds and maybe even develop custom FOSS apps as > needs dictate. You make it sound so simple. :) Can you offer a practical example of what you mean by the above, and how maintenance fits in? Don't get me wrong. Microsoft does things that confound me to no end. I'm only a Linux hobbiest, but all my edge appliances run OpenBSD, and all my web/db/app servers run FreeBSD. I'm fine to recommend and implement OSS where it makes sense. -- m0gely _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
