There are a bunch of standards-compliant H323 clients out there for

With so many good choices out there, why do people insist on using the
most crappy one? Marketing is truly evil.

Because people like me cannot make sense of that listing.  Do I need a
Proxy? What is SIP? What is (UA)?  Which one of the 22 SIP clients
will work for me and my Grandmother?  Are all 22 equally "good
choices"?

Some sort of hand-holding is needed if the none-technical users are to adopt it.

Naturally I would not hand that list to someone's granny. I would
simply say, "get ekiga".

And how does one install Ekiga on Windows?  There is the "windows-only
husband" one has to contend with.

Yes, that pages lists Ekiga under Windows, but clicking through I
haven't found a Windows download:

Also, how does one do the equivalent of SkypeIn and SkypeOut with
Ekiga?  Looking on the website, but haven't found anything.

SkypeIn and SkypeOut are the method of getting on and off the skype
network mostly to landline and mobile phones.
When you purchase SkypeIn you get a phone number anyone can call.

Why not try to use google talk or a real voip service like sipphone or
callcentric.

Thank you, I had no idea what SkypeIn and SkypeOut were.

You can set up asterisk as your own personal PBX, and use ekiga as the
IP phone. I am about to do this myself. A service is required to route
calls onto and off of the phone network. This service can be had for
around $10/mo. Looking at all the various plans right now. Here's a
list of providers:
