When you do a dist-upgrade from one Ubuntu to the next modifies the Grub
menu.lst file so you can still boot to the old kernel. I do this with my
desktop because the update from Intrepid to Jaunty changed the menu.lst file on
only one of the two RAID disks that it is installed on. I could fix it but I'm
too lazy. Jaunty runs fine with the old kernel.

If Ubuntu hides the Grub menu when you boot you have to hit Esc to see it.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, I don't have any other suggestions. Except I
can add that Ubuntu is famous for failing to shut down properly. Usually it
just hangs the user at a black screen, but I have read of the recycling login
window also. I'll bet you can find a lot more suggestions on the Ubuntu forums.
