I know of a small company doing spatial analyses and all their code is in FORTRAN. If you want to be modern, you can probably learn Object COBOL, or use one of Microsoft's "visual" languages. :-) My son was a CS/Math major, and worked in the insurance and banking back end industries writing COBOL code.
