OK. I seem to need to embarrass myself in some public forum before I can get things like this working. Thankfully, this list provides the forum.
Ubuntu, in it's infinite wisdom, has provided a mutually incompatible set of features: the whiz-bang "desktop effects" feature, and vino, the VCN wrapper to talk to a remote desktop. So, with desktop effects turned off I can remote into my desktop in my office (I'm doing it right now from the comfort of my family room upstairs) and use already-opened programs. This, in turn, means that I can leave Thunderbird on all the time so I can go back to responding to email promptly. Whee hee. This has been a terrible week money wise (I've been too sick from a cold to really get any significant paying work done) but boy I'm getting some long standing ankle-biter level computer problems resolved! Now I just need a faster network... -- Tim Wescott Wescott Design Services Voice: 503-631-7815 Cell: 503-349-8432 http://www.wescottdesign.com _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
