I have long used Transmission, even though it is lacking in features. I
like Ktorrent better, but it doesn't work well in Gnome. A couple times
in the past I tried Azureus, but could never get it to work. That was on
Ubuntu. Now I am on Fedora 11 and decided to try it again. After much
hassle I finally got 4.0.0.3 working. (But don't suggest updating to
4.3 because the updater just crashes.)

So here I am trying to download a file by torrent with my newly
installed Vuze. Vuze can't get the tracker to respond. I left it
trying for an hour with no luck.

So I stopped the torrent in Vuze and launched Transmission.
Transmission also failed to get the tracker to respond, but in spite of
not getting a response from the tracker, Transmission started
downloading the pieces. That was half an hour ago and it has downloaded
half the file, at a rate of 200 KB/s.

I am very muy mucho confused and Google isn't helping. How can
Transmission download the pieces without communicating with the
tracker? If Transmission doesn't need the tracker, why does Vuze just
sit and do nothing until it gets an OK from the tracker?
