Thanks Tim! What I take away from this that in certain applications
a small, 10% or so, performance gain can be had w. a custom build.
However, in some cases Ubuntu performed just as well if not better.

I thought it was odd they chose Ubuntu to compare against. I would think
Debian testing, RHEL, or Suse would be a more appropriate choice.

I've run Debian stable and now testing on my laptop for about 3 yrs. Gladly
trading some of the conveniences of Ubuntu for speed, as it always seemed
sluggish to me compared to Debian.
