Happy news.

After removing all vestiges of OOo and reinstalling, it launches. Not
only did it launch, but after shutting it down it can be launched
again. I even rebooted and it still launches fine.

So <crossing fingers> it appears I have fixed whatever was wrong with
it.

Strangely, I note that it recreated both folders in /opt/. But the
structures of the folders is different. That is, the ure-link is now a
folder icon, and it is located within a different folder. And Nautilus
does not report it as broken.
