I have to agree. If you're really looking to save money, scale back those things hogging resources on your box. This doesn't necessarily require switching distributions. (I can't comment on upgrading to later Ubuntu versions, though you should consider that.) Switch to a less resource-intensive window manager (i.e. not Gnome or KDE based) and try out a few different browsers. Adding RAM is always a convenient hack to add life to an aging box and it seems nowadays most software on Linux is chewing through RAM like it's going out of style, so you probably need it. Mozilla's browsers always seem to go through cycles of becoming really lean and fast and then slowly creeping into utter dog-slowness with poorly designed new features, only to be reborn again in a later trimmed down version. Maybe try a later release of that and see if it helps. I have to say I've been interested in Chrome as well, though I haven't tried it on Linux yet. I think those developers are going in the right direction with Linux integration though, so it's promising. Opera has also always been quite fast, though I'm not sure how much of a resource hog it is generally. Opera recently switched to using apt for updates on Debian-based systems (it optionally adds a line to your /etc/apt/sources.list), so that should be really convenient for you as an Ubuntu user.
