Debra, Have you looked at the supported hardware on www.sane-project.org? That will tell you how well it's supported. If it is listed, install SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) with the Xsane GUI front end. It should detect the available hardware and is quite easy to figure out how to use it to scan what you want.
