When I scanned with my OfficeJet V40, I put the paper in and hit the "scan" button. My machine saw the scanner then, and I was able to pull up SANE and get scans. Note that SANE wants to save scans in a format that eats up a lot of disk space. If you can, tell it to save as TIFF or something. Good luck!
