I think the OP ought to answer the "what VPN will we use?" question 
before we can provide serious answers.

I like (and use) OpenVPN -- it's easy to deploy on Linux, Windows, and 
Mac (via Tunnelblick) -- but some shops use ipsec or other 
technologies.
