I went the route of installing the "flashplugin-installer" using synaptic. Upon installation/update this package actually pulls the latest version from Adobe and installs it where/as Ubuntu expects. This package supercedes the previous "flashplugin-nonfree" which was a packaging of the Adobe latest version (but tended to lag a bit).
