Done.

The GRUB bootloader does not show itself. Googling led me to the
instruction to "hold down the shift key" which did give me the GRUB
bootloader. On pressing e I got the following:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
recordfail
insmod ext2
set root=('hd0,1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set f23e2d255-be1b-482f-b2ef-4232025ef\15e
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2..32-21-generic
root=UUID=f23e2d255-be1b-482f-b2ef-4232025ef\15e ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I deleted "quiet splash" and replaced them with "nomodeset".

I pressed <ctrl>x, got the login screen, hit <enter> to accept my
username, typed my password, hit <enter>. The login box went away, the
purple screen stayed there for a few seconds, the screen went blank, and
the purple screen with the login box came back. This time there was no
music.

This box does not have an Nvidia video system. I booted up 9.10 from the
CD and ran lshw -C Display. That told me that I have a VIA
KM400/KN400/P3M800 [S3 UniChrome].

The threads you recommended had a lot of info on problems with ATI and
Nvidia video systems, but I don't recall seeing anything about VIA.

Now that I'm booted with 9.10, is there anything I can do to the 10.04
configuration files on the hard drive?

Thanks.
