Dick,

   The Toshiba laptop here running Xubuntu-10.04 detects and uses wireless
connections automatically. However, when I tried adding the wired network I
ran into the same issues you're facing. Even modifying
/etc/networks/interfaces I could not add a working wired network with a
static IP address. Major PITA.

   Then I discovered that both my Linksys WRT54GC wireless access
points/routers apparently died. I have a new Asus sitting here that I'll set
up as soon as I resolve the memory/hard drive issues on the new desktop and
I'll give up trying to get wired as well as wireless networking going on the
laptop with xubuntu.
