Do you have login fialures in /var/log/auth.log for the time period? Have you tried to replicate the behavior by doing a ctrl-alt-f1 and log into another tty?
I've been running 10.04 for a while now and haven't seen this problem, logging in at the CLI (ssh and other ttys). However, I haven't tested doing it after killing gdm. -- Daniel B.
