Do you have login fialures in /var/log/auth.log for the time period?
Have you tried to replicate the behavior by doing a ctrl-alt-f1 and log
into another tty?

I've been running 10.04 for a while now and haven't seen this problem,
logging in at the CLI (ssh and other ttys). However, I haven't tested
doing it after killing gdm.
