I've recently played with batman-adv, a layer 2 mesh protocol, as an
alternative to WDS.  But it requires buying probably more hardware
than a supported USB radio.

As it happens, I've got a couple WRT54G's that have DDWrt-micro on
them, specifically set up to bridge using WDS.  They are underpowered
(not enough flash storage) for the kinds of things I *usually* do with
them, and would be happy to sell them to someone that need something
similar.
