Someplace around the house I have a full set of Windows 95 install
floppies. I can dig them up if they would be of any help.

It should be easy enough to test if it can boot from a USB stick. If I
recall, your regular computer has a recent version of Ubuntu. Ubuntu
comes with a utility to make a bootable USB stick. You just need an
Ubuntu ISO that you can download from Ubuntu, and a USB stick with
about 800 MB free space.

Also, perhaps we could transplant the hard disk from the laptop to a
different laptop that has a functioning CD drive, install Windows 98,
then move it back. I have a laptop that we could use for the exercise.
