On the Setup page there is a dropdown at the very top, set to Automatic
Configuration - DHCP by default. (DHCP Server down below is set to
Disabled.) The other options in the dropdown are Static IP, PPoE, PPTP
and HeartBeat.

On the Wireless tab there is a dropdown for Wireless Mode, where the
default is AP, and the other options are Client and Adhoc. It is set to
AP. Below is a dropdown for Wireless Network Mode, set to Mixed. The
other options are disabled, B only, G only, and Afterburner. Then there
is Wireless Network Name (SSID), where I entered JJJ. The next dropdown
is for frequencies, and I left it at the default 6-2.437 GHz. Wireless
SSID Broadcast is set to Enable.

There is a Security tab, but it applies only to the firewall, which is
enabled.

There is an Access Restrictions tab, which appears to be for allowing
only PCs with certain addresses, and also for restricting the time of
day when access is permitted.

The next tab is Administration which starts at the top with the router
password. Then it has:

Remote management (disabled)
Management port (grayed out)
Use https (unchecked)
AP watchdog (disabled)
Interval 15 seconds
Bandwidth management (disabled)
Boot wait (on)
Cron (enabled)
Dhcpd (disabled)
Static allocations (box is empty)
DNS masq (enabled)
Local DNS (disabled)
Loopback (enabled
802.1x (enabled)
NTP Client (enabled)
Server IP (box is empty)
PPTP server (disabled)
Resetbuttond (enabled)
Routing (enabled)
SSHD (disabled)
Syslogd (disabled)
Telnet (disabled)
Tftpd (enabled)
UPnP (disabled)

The final tab is Status, which reports the following:

MAC address: 00:0F:66:09:8C:BF
Router name (JJJ - I set it to this on the Setup tab)
Host name (blank)
Domain name (blank)
Login type (set to Automatic Configuration - DHCP)
IP Address (0.0.0.0)
Subnet mask (0.0.0.0)
Default gateway (0.0.0.0)
DNS 1, DNS 2 and DNS 3, all blank
At the bottom are two buttons: DNS Release and DHCP Renew.

Each of the above pages has a "more" button in the corner. If you click
on it you get a "help" page, that says really helpful things like
"Remote management: use this option to enable or disable remote
management."

I hope somewhere in the above there is something that will make it
clear what is wrong.

Or maybe this is the wrong kind of hardware for what I want to
accomplish. And you were right at the beginning - I don't intend to get
rid of the D-Link router, as it is an expensive gigabit router.
