Early wednesday morning April 6, yum update loaded glibc-2.5-58. This seems to be what broke gnome-panel on my Scientific Linux 5.4 systems, and is affecting other SL users elsewhere. If I restart X, the gnome panel goes away, and sometimes gnome hangs (though ssh access still works).
While this distro is based on some 3 year old components, the panel problem also may be affecting Ubuntu 11.10 alpha: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/754197 I'm still learning more about this. Until then, I suggest folks don't logout/login (which restarts X) until they are sure they are not affected, or have time to debug it.
