Since I was still seeing gibberish Chinese in the banner ads (yes, it is Chinese characters, but the the google translator interpretation suggests more gibberish than something real) I'm guessing it might be java-related. So I've just tried reinstalling a fresh copy of the Java Runtime Environment from the Sun site. If it doesn't help, I'll let y'all know.
