As it happens, I am typing this on an EEEpc 701 4G with ubuntu 11.04
(there are parts that overflowed onto an SD card). I did manage to
find and reselect the Classic Desktop, so it is reasonable comfortable
again. What I read about future intentions, though, gives me
considerabe pause about the future of Ubuntu.

Yeah, I finally buckled as more and more devices started showing up
(family laptops, family desktops) that I didn't want to have to pay so
much attention to. Ubuntu has historically given a pleasant
out-of-the-box experience for non-nerds. Maybe Unity would be fine
for a non-nerd, but ... when they ask *me* about something, it would
be nice to know the answer. I can't see myself using that thing
enough to know the answer.
