To close this thread and preserve the information for posterity: the HP Scanjet 5200C is not repairable. HP produced no service manuals and parts are not available either. I replaced the HP with an Epson Perfection 3200 Photo. Xsane immediately recognized it, but as a GT-9800 (same epson2 driver) and it works great on documents, photographic prints, and negatives.
