So far as I am aware, no, but I am not an expert. However, in
Australia, the answer would categorically be no: you are expected to
buy the DVD versions formally, not shift the VHS ones.

I don't honestly think you are more at risk from doing this than most
people are for their less-than-legal media, or format shifting. After
all, CD to iPod is more or less in the same bucket, and that doesn't
seem to slow anyone down. ;)

I think so, yes, but the law doesn't agree. Which is, I think, a
failing of the law.

Yeah. This is pretty much my view, too. I also feel that people
should be aware of what the law says, even if the law is an ass. ;)

On the plus side, since I doubt it makes any difference to the legal
status, IMO you don't have to find a way to store those VHS tapes.
