Rich, You need to mount the partition instead of the device.  The partition
is listed in the line "sd 8:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
sdb: *sdb1*"

Try this:
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/thumb

This assumes that /mnt/thumb is an existing directory.
