Yes you need to install both, and yes it works through cups. I installed from RPMs. The cupswrapper package configured and restarted the cups service. As part of the automatic configuration the install script set up a new printer assuming a local USB connection, which unfortunately was incorrect in my case. I'm using the WLAN interface for my printer. So I had to use the printer admin tool to delete the USB printer and add a network printer.
