The re-installation of xubuntu-11.10 is almost complete. Connection to a wireless access point away from here works, but the system is not properly configured for use here. I need your advice on how to re-establish connectivity here without giving up external access.
I run a static network here. The wireless access point is set only to the MAC addresses of the two portables here: the Toshiba and the Dell. On the local network the Toshiba is host 192.168.55.5. In /etc/network/interfaces on that host I now have: auto lo wlan0 iface lo inet loopback (# I thought that lo was the loopback interface) address 192.168.55.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.55.4 I then rebooted the system but no joy. The annoying network manager dialog box keeps popping up telling me that the machine is not connected to the network and asking for a password. Well, I know it's not connected, and a password should not be required since the MAC address has been sufficient in the past. The interfaces file is probably not correct and my Google searches haven't shown me how to properly set it up. I didn't save the working interfaces file so I can't restore it. How should that file be constructed, and what else do I do to establish an automatic connection to the local network?
