Do you have the man page? It appeared quite good and complete:
$man 5 interfaces
Here's an example:
auto lo wlan0
iface lo inet loopback
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.55.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.55.4
I've modified that from the example given in the man page referenced above.
