I just tried again, exactly as you did. When I had /usr/bin/claws-mail
selected in the file browser window I clicked on Open. The file browser
window closed and the mailto dropdown still said Evolution (default). I
also tried double clicking on /usr/bin/claws-mail instead of using the
Open button, but it still refuses to accept the binary.

Well, at least it's good to know that it works for you. Must be
something else that is messing up my Firefox 8.
