Most home routers come with pings disabled these days. Also, most of them
do not have an option specifically for this service - it's bundled in with
other rather onerous "protections" and labeled something like "Block
anonymous Internet requests" or similar.

You most likely will not be able to enable it specifically. ICMP is a
separate protocol, at the same level as TCP and UDP.

I haven't used a Netgear in years, and I don't think I've ever looked at
the admin panel for a FVS318. Since this model appears to be heavily geared
towards VPN, I would imagine the options related to what you're trying to
accomplish will likely be different from other Netgear interfaces. So I
would not be able to render a guess as to where the option is. I could
probably find it by looking at the interface and poking around for a few
minutes.
