Thank you, Mike. I'll look at your references. When I searched the Web I found lots of ubuntu threads on fora but this laptop is running Slackware-13.37/x86_64 and there is no network manager. Germane to the wicd-1.7.0 bug, I wonder why it bites here and not elsewhere. I am running the same wicd version (from the same Slackware subscription DVD) on my Dell laptop with no issues at all. But, when here in the office that host is connected by a cat5 cable and I use the wireless only when I'm elsewhere. And it works everywhere else. The older laptop that this Sony is replacing worked with either wicd or network manager (it runs xubuntu-11.10) at coffee shopts and other places but not here. This suggests to me that there's something related to how either wicd in the laptop or the Asus WAP is configured that authentification fails. I can see that wicd connects to the WAP but times out failing to accept the PSK. I suppose that I can try the wicd version from -13.1.
