Yes!  This is exactly what I've been doing for years.

The other thing I do on Debian, where I tend to install a lot of stuff
through aptitude, is to go into aptitude's settings and disable
"install recommended dependencies automatically".  Sometimes
recommended ones make a lot of sense.  But sometimes they lead to a
long chain of bloat that you don't need.
