Something that no one has mentioned, although I don't know if it is
important to Richard or not, but Ubuntu, Mint and Fedora come with an
update manager that announces available updates. You can disable it,
and I did on my Fedora laptop because it was just too much. About once
every three weeks these distros want you to install a new kernel, and
in between there is always something else that requires you to at least
log out and back in again. 

If you're in the habit of rebooting every few days it's probably not a
big deal. If you want a system that "just runs" and leaves you alone,
stay away from these distros.
