Ignorance and miscommunication. Denis said "Ubuntu" and I didn't
realize until after he installed it that he intended to run Xfce.

Because his netbook has no optical drive we had to make a bootable USB
drive. My computer has Fedora 16 which comes with a utility to make a
bootable USB, but it won't work with anything but Fedora images.
However, I had previously installed UNetbootin on the recommendation
that it could make a bootable USB drive out of any distro image. At the
Clinic Sunday was the first time I ever tried to use it. I am happy to
report that it made Denis' USB drive bootable with 12.10, exactly as
advertised.

So Denis, if you want to start over with Xubuntu, install UNetbootin,
download Xubuntu, and repeat what we did at the Clinic. No guarantees
that it will solve the other issues you have, however, but at least it
will not have any unnecessary parts of other desktop environments in
it.
