The .gvfs folder first appeared in Ubuntu several years ago. I know
that because I got hit with the same thing on my laptop, and I haven't
run Ubuntu on it for at least two years now.

In my case I was using rdiff-backup, rather than rsync. Eventually I
figured out that a fresh install of Ubuntu would recreate the .gvfs
folder, therefore there was no real need to back it up. I added it to
my excludes file, rdiff-backup ignores it, and the backup completes
without issue.

I also dimly recall that it was part of Gnome, not Ubuntu, but that
memory is sketchy.
