The speakers work, the sound card works, it still sounds like some mixer
settings got changed because you added a CD/DVD to the system.  On my
system the sound that comes out of the rear speaker jack is controlled by a
mixer control labeled "Front"  and the sound that  comes out the front is
controlled by "headphone".   Do you still hear sound from the tower when
the external speakers are totally unplugged from the system?
