I downloaded and installed QasMixer and the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I ran them
one at a time and found that they essentially show the same thing -- as
one would expect.
QasMixer shows me that I have Headphone, Speaker 0, Speaker 1, PCM,
Center, and LFE for output "channels". Headphone, Speaker 1, and PCM
show the faders at max, and each (except for PCM) has a dark circle
(called "Playback Switch") below them. Speaker 0's Playback Switch is a
light circle, and its fader is at minimum. I tried plugging the external
speakers into the rear jack and playing with the Playback Switch and
fader for Speaker 0 with no effect. If I turn off Speaker 1 with the
Playback Switch while the speakers are plugged into the front jack, the
sound is muted.
As part of my investigation I looked at the BIOS settings and found:
System Setup
Advanced
Peripheral Configuration
Audio
High Definition Front Panel Audio <ENABLE>
I don't know if that has an particular significance in this situation,
but I include the observation for completeness.
The system works well with the speakers plugged into the front jack, so
I'll probably leave it at that for now.
