I suspected as much, and indeed was planning to do that, first. I think I'll be able to hear any beeps if I do it while paying attention to it with the cover off. > It depends on what type of CPU you are using, what generation, etc Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz > ... but > running a CPU with no cooling for any appreciable amount of time can lead > to trouble. > In some cases with older hardware, it can literally mean the CPU could > smoke itself! *see below > > I know in your case (it sounds like anyway) you are not actually removing > the heatsink/fan assembly, so you should be OK for a brief amount of time. > I have learned by the school of hard knocks to be extra cautious with this > kind of thing. No. I wouldn't want to fuss with the CPU heat sink. I've done that before, and I'd rather not mess with the heat sink grease, etc. The fan assembly is a nice heavy plastic that easily slides over the outer fins of the heat sink. As mentioned in an earlier, unrelated post, it also has a speaker inside the fan housing. Thanks for the cautionary advice, and the interesting war story. -- Regards, Dick Steffens _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
