I suspected as much, and indeed was planning to do that, first. I think 
I'll be able to hear any beeps if I do it while paying attention to it 
with the cover off.

No. I wouldn't want to fuss with the CPU heat sink. I've done that 
before, and I'd rather not mess with the heat sink grease, etc. The fan 
assembly is a nice heavy plastic that easily slides over the outer fins 
of the heat sink. As mentioned in an earlier, unrelated post, it also 
has a speaker inside the fan housing.

Thanks for the cautionary advice, and the interesting war story.
