I think you're wise to be cautious.  OTOH, unplugging without unmounting 
is definitely an invitation for disk corruption.

I assume you're referring to SeaTools.  IIRC, SeaTools is an image that 
you boot.  No Windows required.  It is capable of more than just reading 
the smart data.  In order to do a warranty return, I think they will 
want you to run it.  I believe it's non-destructive as well, at least 
when run in its default mode.  Of course you should confirm this for 
yourself.
