>Failing drives often put stuff in /var/messages, and /dmesg. I didn't check that, but the current problem is under control. No data loss. The only remaining question is whether it needs to be replaced under warranty. >Also, the GoFlex is small and warm when doing a lot of work. >Might the drive have spent some not-quite-so-quality time >underneath a warmth-seeking cat? No possibility of that. The cats never get on the desk/table. Their feet are often muddy and I would be able to tell. Besides, this drive resided between the desktop monitor and the printer. It always had several centimeters of free space around it, but not enough room for a cat to snuggle up to it. Plus, they seem to avoid the computers. I have a theory that the computers emit sound at a frequency that they do not like. Either that or they instinctively know that if they sit on the computers the big human will hit them. I think the likelihood is the way I used it caused the problems. I seed some of my favorite old movies via torrent on the laptop 24/7. But when it is time to take the laptop elsewhere I shut down Ktorrent, then other running applications, and finally shut down the laptop. But I do not ordinarily umount the drive before shutting down the computer, although I always wait until the computer is completely shut down before removing it from its dock. If Fedora's shutdown procedure did not wait until the drive was finished it is possible that this caused the problems. On the other hand, maybe it is really failing. :( This weekend I will try some of the utilities that King Beowulf and others suggested and see what happens. I will also dig out my receipts to see exactly when I bought it. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
