I added the Xfce4 sensor plugin to the panel, so now I can see the
temps. It shows CPU0 and CPU1, fan speed, hard disk temp and ACPI mWh.
The CPU temps seem to run between 39-45 C and the hard disk stays at a
steady 32 C. The fan is on about half the time at a speed of 2534 rpm.

I need to figure out some kind of CPU stress test to see how hot I can
get the CPUs and to watch the fan speed as they heat up.

I doubt it is the CPU temps that is causing the problem because I
never feel heat and the air coming out the vent is barely warmer than
the room air. But your suggestion made me realize that the sudden black
screen without any symptoms or error messages means that it is probably
hardware.
