Mike, I must not have been clear: /usr/bin/alsamixer exists. There is only one /alsamixer, usr/bin/alsamixer. Root can run this tool but a user cannot. The /perms of usr/bin/alsamixer are 755 and it's owned by root.root > As a test can you execute "amixer" as a non-root user? Nope. Same results as with alsamixer. Both amixer and alsamixer are in /usr/bin. A user can find them with 'locate' but cannot run them.
