I installed the Ubuntu low-latency kernel, hoping that it would be
better than the generic kernel, but the version 3.2.0-40-lowlatency
#43-Ubuntu kernel actually was worse and froze nanosleep for up to 2.2
seconds, which is a new record delay. The processor is a very fast
12-core I7 chip.

Has someone done a write up on system interrupt timers and how they
can be utilized for a high reliability timer?

I found out that Suse is charging about $2500/yr subscription for
their Enterprise linux with high reliability and Red Hat MRG is not
much less. Both companies appear to be making money from the very
same need that I now face.
