For my real time stuff, I use a vanilla kernal so I can apply Ingo 
Molnar's Realtime preemption patch. You may have to switch to a 
distribution that utilizes a vanilla kernel.

I hesitate to write this as I have not applied it to a more recent 
kernel than a couple years ago, so YMMV.
