The laptop (server) is Xubuntu 13.10 and the desktop (client) is Xubuntu
12.04.

On both computers ('version' is uppercase):

        mount -V
mount from util-linux 2.20.1 (with libblkid and selinux support)

So the versions for mount appear to be the same. I should also check
other package versions, but I don't know what packages are involved
other than mount.

As for messages, I am not sure where the messages are. I looked
in /var/log and I do not have a messages.log file. I dimly remember
reading somewhere that the *buntus had rearranged the logs and no
longer use a messages.log file, but I can't remember what the new
scheme is.

Using the GUI file browser I sorted the contents of /var/log in
time-modified order and then opened all files that had been modified
recently, but none of them contained any messages that looked like they
had anything to do with nfs or permissions.

So far I have spent hours trying to get this working. It might be
simpler to give up and just continue transferring files with my USB
thumb drive.
