Progress! I wanted to be sure that running showmount -e on the desktop was actually reading the exports file on the laptop. So I edited the exports file on the laptop and added my home folder, then did exportfs -a. Turning to the desktop I ran showmount -e again, and this time it displayed two folders, the second one being the just-added home folder. Elated with this small step forward I tried mounting my home folder on the laptop in /media on the desktop. It worked! Flushed with success I tried mounting /media/jjj/Movies again, but I still got the same error message as before. :( Conclusion: Either there is something wrong with the syntax of my mount command, or the syntax of the share in /etc/exports is wrong, or there is something funny happening because /media/jjj/Movies is an external USB drive. Note, however, that previously I did chmod 777 on the whole /media folder, and I know for a fact that the drive is mounted on the laptop. At least now I can eliminate a lot of wondering about whether the network is functioning properly with all the proper libraries and utilities. _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
