Richard, Linux, like most unices, is built of small pieces assembled in multiple ways to solve different problems/needs. Like an erector set used to produce all sorts of different-looking structures. (Our generation had erector sets while more recent ones have Leggo sets.) If I correctly understand your question you are looking for an overview of linux. I highly recommend Carla Schroeder's books for this. If I'm wrong in my assumption then I don't understand your question. Most of us have a situation and are interested in learning how to address or resolve it. We know what is happening (or not happening), when it occurs, and learning why is a precursor to understanding how to resolve it. Many years ago Eric Harrison explained linux to me: it has little tools each doing a single, specific task that is easy to understand and learn. However, there are thousands of these little tools which makes learning and understanding more difficult.
