I will try that this evening If you can get to the bootloader (GRUB, probably) menu and edit the kernel commandline, the traditional (maybe obsolete) technique was to add something like init=/bin/bash, which would give you a root shell. You might need to mount or remount filesystems and the like to get write access to the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow. Apologies for vagueness, it isn't an every day thing, so details are rusty. But that was the general approach.
