Your distribution's bootable installer image (CD, DVD, USB flash
drive) should include a rescue mode, and most (all?) include the
option to mount one of the computer's hard drive partitions as the
root file system.  The system boots off the installer image, but once
the process is complete, it will switch to the chosen hard drive
partition as root.  This allows you to log in and run administrative
commands (e.g., "passwd") almost as if you'd booted directly from your
hard drive.
